Google, Facebook and Your Newspaper

By William E. (Bill) Garber

Who really makes the most money?  The current measure over in the digital world is Average Revenue Per User or ARPU.  Let’s see how wildly popular digital businesses compare with your business using the annualized ARPU.

Facebook = $5

Google ARPU = $28

Weekly Newspaper ARPU = $66

That is right, the typical weekly newspaper generates well over twice what Google generates from each user.   Remember, Dizzy Dean is reported to have said that if you do it, it isn’t bragging.  And Community Newspapers sure do it!

You can check out the ARPU for Google and Facebook and other interesting businesses here:  http://cnnmon.ie/MBp08K    Of course, the real money is being made in subscription businesses such as cable television services where this link suggests that AT&T U-Verse 3-Play generates $2,021 in ARPU, though I’m pretty sure that outfit is mistaking a user for a household. In that case, the weekly newspaper is more like $133 annually.

For the record, the weekly newspaper ARPU is calculated on 2 persons per paper, 1,500 paid circulation, and $200,000 annual revenue.

Interlink Certified by USPS as eDoc Software Vendor

By Brad Hill
General Manager

I’m thrilled to announce that Interlink is now certified with the US Postal Service as an authorized vendor of software for submitting eDoc (electronic documentation) via Mail.XML! We also are the first vendor to have a customer authorized to submit eDoc for Periodical mail via Mail.XML.

As a reminder, eDoc allows mailers to submit postage statements and qualification reports to the USPS electronically. This information goes directly into the PostalOne! system, saving the need for printing and hand-delivering pages of required documentation.

Interlink joins six other companies on the certified vendor list and is one of only three certified to submit eDoc via Mail.XML. The others are certified only for use with the Mail.Dat format.

Beta testing currently is underway with several newspapers running Interlink Circulation to ensure success with actual mailings under a variety of scenarios. Once confirmed, we will announce general availability so other publications can begin benefiting from this fantastic new feature.

Hello, Interlink Circulation 2.0!

After more than 10,000 conversations, it is time to say goodbye.

Not to our clients, of course, but to the country’s most famous newspaper circulation system, Interlink Circulation 1.x which our clients have been using for many years now.

Already operators at 1,500 community newspapers are saying, “Hello!” to Interlink Circulation 2.0. Our clients don’t have to order it, and they surely won’t be receiving a bill for it. Interlink Circulation 2.0 will arrive automatically on their computer ready for them to upgrade with a simple click of the mouse.

Of course, you’ll see some new buttons, though you’ll be able to close your next issue and print your reports using the same old buttons you have loved for so long. You’ll be able to ease into the new functions and take advantage of the new features at your own pace.

Intelligent Mail Barcodes, Interlink & YOU!

By now most mailers are familiar with the term Intelligent Mail Barcode or IMB. As it pertains to newspapers, the primary interest in IMB is that it is to replace the current POSTNET barcode as the requirement to claim automation rates when mailing.

It comes as a relief to many that the requirement to move to IMB in May 2011 has been delayed by the United States Postal Service. Making the move to IMB requires mailers to obtain a mailer ID, software modifications and a printer or inkjet system that will support the new format.
No new date has been announced yet but rest assured that Interlink Circulation will have support for basic IMB at no additional cost when it is required to ensure that those precious, even necessary, automation discounts are preserved.
